"Sidelights on the Development of Normal School into Trinity College (now Duke University)" was written by Avery in 1976. According to a letter she wrote to Dr. Mattie Russell of the former Manuscript Dept. at Perkins Library, she used letters from the Southern Historical Collection at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill as her sources. The history does not include footnotes or a bibliography.
